Africa’s healthcare systems remain underdeveloped and are undergoing a painstakingly slow transitional advancement stages. Because of changing lifestyles the prevalence of previously once rare diseases, such as Diabetes, Heart Disease and Cancer have risen exponentially in recent years governments and private industry are struggling to keep up with these cases. Most of these diseases go undetected for a long time and by the time patients are diagnosed it is often at advanced states or even too late to effectively treat.
Similarly, easily preventable and curable ailments such as Malaria, tuberculosis, acute lower-respiratory infections kill thousands of people annually. Governments, particularly in East Africa, are largely unprepared and have been very slow to respond to the crisis. The hospitals, public and private, who provide the care required are very few and inadequately equipped.
